What the Parables Say to Us

Lately, I have been teaching a New Testament Scripture class to our Sisters in initial formation, Sister Stefanie and Novice Jackie. But everyone is invited to attend so there are about 15 other Sisters who fill the room. No matter how long we have read and prayed with the Bible, at Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharist, I think we all realize there is no end to what we can learn anew each time we encounter the Scriptures through the words, actions and call of Jesus!  Our discussions make for an enjoyable evening two nights a month.

Inquirers Learn about Monastic Life

This week there are two inquirers at the Monastery experiencing life in community. Both women have been here for shorter periods of time before, but a week gives them an opportunity to really experience the daily rhythm of our lives. One woman is from Wisconsin and finishing her senior year of college.  The second woman is from Illinois and works in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. A third inquirer will join us for the weekend. What they have been discovering is the simplicity – as well as the joy – of monastic life. Continue Reading

What We Do During Retreat

We are on retreat this week, meaning that the whole community is home; silent, attending presentations by Sr. Shawn Carruth, OSB (Mount St. Benedict Monastery, Crookston, Minn.), and in deep prayer.

Retreat time is, for our Sisters, in some ways the most life-giving week of the year. It is a time of deep reflection and rest, with undivided attention on God and God’s creation. No one is running off to ministries after prayers this week! Continue Reading

Details from a Monastery Visit

The time is sure going quickly.  ‘E’ has been here since Monday and the week has been packed.  Two afternoons she went with Sr. Mary S. and helped her prepared for next week’s summer bible school at Sacred Heart Church in Davenport. I think they finished repairing the camel and painting the walls of Jerusalem. E works as an educational assistant so she was really up to the job! Continue Reading

Summer Benedictine Rhythm

Gardening is contemplative activity. We have beautiful grounds at the Monastery and many Sisters have their own gardens. You can often see a Sister here or there tending her garden. I have a great flower/herb garden at the Monastery and am also working with some friends to plant a new veggie and flower garden to help St. Joseph House, a home serving homeless women and children.
