Jesus surprises not only his guests, the Greeks, but also his disciples and the other people standing around listening to him. It is five days before Passover (and his death) and he tells them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”
Then he adds, “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies; it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies; it produces much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it and who ever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal Life.”
That not only must have surprised the listeners but actually shocked and angered them.
They want a King, Royal, Crowned , Wealthy, Prominent. Not someone who will die!
In these last two weeks of Lent, let us ask this question: Are we ready to follow Jesus by dying to our selfishness and surrendering our pride?
All we need to do is look around to see the seed that fell to the ground last fall now lives. Listen! It shouts, “I’m Alive! I’m Alive!”
