In Catholic school I was taught that today is “Spy Wednesday.” It’s the day when Judas arranges to have Jesus arrested.
Judas has been stealing money for the poor from the Apostles’ purse. Now, he earns more money by betraying Jesus.
We all have times in our lives when we need more money. But what could have motivated Judas first to steal, and then give over his once-friend for cash?
What can we learn from it? Is money the “root of all evil” in our own lives? Do we seek prestige … power … status with our things? What are we willing to sacrifice to get them?
Let’s ask ourselves whether these things lead to happiness. Let’s ask ourselves whether they lead us to become who we are meant to be.
Let’s start with this question: Do I want this? Or need this?
Let’s pray to know the difference … and how we are called to share with others who really need. Let’s “spy” the real message in this story!
