It is amazing that another Advent is upon us. Seems like yesterday we were awaiting the Savior’s birth…and here it is again. This year, I’m thinking about courage.
Take John the Baptist. Soon we will be hearing about him announcing the coming of Jesus, the Messiah. What more courageous man is there than John? He put himself out there for Jesus in a very, very public way..right at the start of Jesus’ ministry. No doubt John knew the inevitable result would be his death. Keep courage in mind as we hear about John this Advent.
Today is the Feast of St. Andrew the Apostle, another story of courage that begins the Advent season. Andrew left all that was familiar..his home, his family, his fishing life…to follow Jesus. He jumped right into a major life change without a doubt. What courage to follow his convictions.
A third courageous person is, of course, Mary. She had to be very young woman when she followed God’s beckoning to be the mother of Jesus. When I was young, I would have been too wrapped up in ME to hear God’s challenge. Mary trusted God so deeply that she did as He asked. A young woman who started down an unknown path of motherhood. As Advent continues we will hear of her challenges and her powerful journey to Bethlehem.
We will hear many more stories of courage between now and the Birth of Jesus. The question for each of us – at least I ask myself this – is how courageous am I for Jesus? Can I put myself out there to announce his Love? Can I trust Jesus enough to leave familiar behind to do as he desires of me? Can I trust God enough to know that the path He challenges me to walk can give birth to a new life?
What do you think?
