The annual Monastic Institute at St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn., provides a wonderful opportunity to study and reflect deeply on Benedictine spirituality for a few days every summer. Several of us usually go. I did last summer, and I’m still thinking about it.
Sister Jeana Visel, OSB spoke on the new evangelization, which is about seeking God and helping others to do the same.
One of the ways to achieve this goal is to be rooted in Scripture. Of course, we Benedictines are deeply rooted in Scripture. We pray with Scripture every day, several times a day. We pray the psalms during our Liturgy of the Hours. We pray with Scripture during Lectio Divina. We pray with Scripture during daily Eucharist.
Sister Jeana ended with a wonderful, probing question. Knowing our rootedness in Scripture, she asked, “How do we live and share this experience as a proclamation of who Jesus is?” Food for thought … action … and evangelization.
