The United States Council of Catholic Bishops conducted a survey of women and men between 15 and 40 years old. They asked respondents who had never considered becoming a religious sister or brother, why not? 24% of the respondents said, “Because I’m not holy enough.”
Well, who is? I’m not. I take solace in a reflection written by Father Anthony Gittins in Give Us This Day: “Jesus does not ask us to believe the impossible; only the improbable.”
Wow! That gives me hope!! I am an imperfect person who certainly knows how improbable it is that Jesus would call me. I might even assert that that’s why I’m here: to become holy with 40 other women who are fighting the same battle. We fall down and get up … we strive for the improbable goal of being “holy enough.”
Jesus asks the improbable. Not the impossible.
So if you are one of those women who have thought of religious life and then said I am not holy enough, don’t let it stop you. Come check us out. We are all working towards the goal of holiness … and welcome you on our path.
